How signing Sergio Reguilón and Gareth Bale would transform Spurs

Guardian - ons, 16/09/2020 - 20:31

The Real Madrid pair would give José Mourinho more options and his team more balance in attack and defence

By Martin Laurence for WhoScored

It has been a fairly typical transfer window for Tottenham so far, with a huge number of players being linked with the club but most of those rumours falling flat. However, that is looking increasingly likely to change, with new arrivals Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Matt Doherty perhaps being joined by an eye-catching duo from Real Madrid. Sergio Reguilón is expected to sign for Spurs this week, following a fine season on loan at Sevilla, and a return for Gareth Bale appears a real possibility.

No team should be judged on one game, but the manner of Spurs’ defeat to Everton at the weekend suggested there is big room for improvement. For all his merits as a dependable defender, Ben Davies’ lack of attacking threat leaves the side imbalanced. They are also lacking strength in depth in attack – a problem that was evident throughout last season.

Today’s talk is going its separate ways

This transfer window needed a good Gareth Bale story and the Mill is mightily relieved that in a world so fraught with anxiety and uncertainty we can now anchor ourselves firmly to this one. In case you’ve been, I don’t know, asleep or something, Bale is closing in on a loan return to Tottenham – and could be in José’s warm embrace within days. Someone really ought to make a documentary.

Tottenham have opened talks with Real Madrid about a loan return for Gareth Bale. Their interest comes as Manchester United also consider a loan for the Wales international as an alternative to Jadon Sancho.

Spurs want to explore what may be possible but there is a caveat. Bale earns a basic £600,000 a week and sources close to him have said he would be unwilling to take a pay cut. “Gareth still loves Spurs,” his agent Jonathan Barnett told the BBC. “It’s where he wants to be.”

Premier League: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Guardian - man, 14/09/2020 - 09:00

Roy Hodgson showed his ability to improvise, while Fulham and West Brom may well struggle without reinforcements

The cameo lasted 10 minutes but Eberechi Eze looked, er, at ease as he made his debut for Crystal Palace against Southampton. Repeating an almost constant condition of his time as manager, Roy Hodgson had been forced to play a patched-up side. He had central midfielders in central defence and wingers up front. But the adaptability of the manager means he can always find a way with the numbers. It is extra quality that Palace need. Alongside the return of Michy Batshuayi on loan, the addition of Eze looks to have ticked that box. Signed from QPR for £16m, he brings fresh qualities to the side. Hodgson is clear he wants more signings, but those numbers need to be the right ones if Palace are to improve their league position. Extra quality around Wilfried Zaha, the decisive figure against Southampton, might also help with his wanderlust too. Paul MacInnes

Silky Rodríguez gives reason for Everton fans' imagination to run riot | Jonathan Liew

Guardian - søn, 13/09/2020 - 21:26

It may be opening weekend optimism, but the Colombian lifted Carlo Ancelotti’s side and left Tottenham in the dust

First weekends are all about hope. Fresh grass and fresh dreams. The new tactics that oppositions haven’t yet worked out, and the new players who haven’t yet been paid for. It’s a weekend for flinging perspective to one side and letting your imagination run riot, a weekend of kings and frauds and nothing in between. Mohamed Salah is back. Fulham are doomed. West Ham are in crisis. VAR is good now. And this is our year, as assuredly as all the others were before them.

Naturally, all this feeds giddily into football’s rapacious content‑industrial complex, where things are always being learned, where definitive judgments are eternally being handed down, where phrases such as “ominous statement of intent”, “on this admittedly flimsy evidence” and “early days, but” are thrashed to within an inch of their meaning. Come May, this boundless optimism will inevitably be cannibalised and fed back into the content machine as scornful tweets and hindsight journalism. But then, anybody accusing football fans of getting ahead of themselves is probably guilty of mislaying the entire point of being a football fan in the first place.

Tottenham: New season, new start, new problems

Sky Sports - søn, 13/09/2020 - 21:10
Talk of crisis on the opening weekend of a Premier League season often feels over the top but when that team has made itself the focus of a new documentary drama series, perhaps it is appropriate. The cameras were on as Tottenham kicked off their campaign on Sunday but they left it to Everton to provide the action as they slumped to a 1-0 home defeat.
